But these troops were easy targets and the majority were shot or otherwise disposed.<\/p>\n<p>By <strong>5am<\/strong> the Bde had been relieved and withdrew to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Foucaucourt<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span id='easy-footnote-1-198' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=198#easy-footnote-bottom-1-198' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Foucaucourt&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span>, as a consequence saw very little action on the 24th. The 4th Bn marched west to<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Misery<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span id='easy-footnote-2-198' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=198#easy-footnote-bottom-2-198' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Misery&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span>, where a meal was taken, arriving in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Foucaucourt<\/span> around <strong>1pm<\/strong>. By this time the entire 149th and 151st Bdes were concentrated here, while the 150th Bde was at<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Belloy-en-Santerre\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span id='easy-footnote-3-198' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=198#easy-footnote-bottom-3-198' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Belloy-en-Santerre\u00a0&lt;\/span&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the 8th Divn had attacked and driven back enemy troops who had succeeded in crossing the canal at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">St Christ<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span id='easy-footnote-4-198' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=198#easy-footnote-bottom-4-198' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;St Christ&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Betherncourt<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span id='easy-footnote-5-198' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=198#easy-footnote-bottom-5-198' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Betherncourt&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span>. However, at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Pargny<\/span> the Germans were able to maintain their position on the west bank of the canal.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>5pm<\/strong> the 149th Bde took up a line one thousand yards in length, running north and south through the eastern end of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Assevillers<\/span> village. The 5th Bn were on the right, the 6th Bn on the left and the 4th Bn were held in reserve on the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Assevillers<\/span> -<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Fay<\/span> road. Bde HQ was at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Estrees<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The Bn left<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Foucacourt<\/span> at <strong>6.30pm<\/strong>, marching to the sugar refinery near <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ashevillers<\/span>. At <strong>8.30pm<\/strong> the 149th Bde was placed at the disposal of the 66th Divn.<\/p>\n<p>Little is recorded for the 25th of March, the 4th Bn War Diary merely stating that at <strong>10am<\/strong> they moved into the trenches in front of<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Ashevillers<\/span>. The 149th Bde HQ Diary records that at <strong>9pm<\/strong> the 149th Bde force withdrew fighting\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-198-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-198-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-198-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-198-1-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>At least 1 fusilier from the 4th Bn was killed in action or died of wounds during the Somme Crossings.
