The 4th Bn were billeted at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Beaufort<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span id='easy-footnote-1-100' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=100#easy-footnote-bottom-1-100' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Beaufort&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span> and the days were filled with training exercises.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>9.30am<\/strong> that morning, all the Bn officers were conducting an outpost scheme on the ground between <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Beaufort<\/span> and<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Manin<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span id='easy-footnote-2-100' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=100#easy-footnote-bottom-2-100' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Manin&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span> and at <strong>2pm<\/strong> \u2018C\u2019 and \u2018D\u2019 Coys were exercised in a tactical scheme on the same ground.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>11.30pm<\/strong> orders were issued to the three Infantry Bdes of the 50th Division to move to the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Habarcq- Wanquetin<\/span> area on the 10th. The 149th Bde were to take the first turn in the front line.<\/p>\n<p>Training for the 4th Bn continued at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wanquetin<\/span>, with\u2018C\u2019 and \u2018D\u2019 Coys conducting bayonet training at <strong>10am<\/strong> followed by a short march. At <strong>3.30pm<\/strong> the snow began to fall again. During the afternoon the men's packs were stored and sandbags, very lights, grenades and flares were issued. A motor lorry delivered these stores to \u2018A\u2019 and \u2018B\u2019 Coys and brought their packs back to<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Wanquetin<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The 6th and 7th Bns set off at<strong> 5.15pm<\/strong>, marching eastwards straight through <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Arras<\/span> and on to the trenches held by the 42nd Bde south of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Tilloy<\/span>. At <strong>6pm<\/strong>, the 4th Bn (minus \u2018A\u2019 and \u2018B\u2019 Coys) paraded then marched, while the snow fell heavily, via <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Warlus<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Dainville<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Arras<\/span> to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ronville Caves<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span id='easy-footnote-11-100' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=100#easy-footnote-bottom-11-100' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Ronville Caves&lt;\/span&gt; - Cave and tunnel system extending south eastwards from &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Arras&lt;\/span&gt;.&lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span>, arriving there at midnight. The 5th Bn moved into support, occupying the old German front line, the 4th Bn were held in reserve at <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ronville Caves<\/span>. The town is comparatively little damaged, but there seem to be practically no civilians\u201d.<\/em> [zotpressInText item=\"{ZZCPTDHK,132}\"].<\/p>\n<p>During the afternoon <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Lt Col Gibson<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Major Robb<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">2nd Lt Wilso<\/span>n reconnoitred the area around <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines<\/span> <span id='easy-footnote-16-100' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=100#easy-footnote-bottom-16-100' title=' &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines&lt;\/span&gt; '><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Telegraph Hill<\/span> . \u2018B\u2019 Coy marched from<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Beau tz Les L\u2026<\/span> and joined the 4th Bn at <strong>9pm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>midnight<\/strong> on the 12th GOC 50th Divn assumed command of the front line sector and Divisional HQ opened in<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Arras<\/span>. The new sector was the northern part of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hindenburg Line<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span id='easy-footnote-17-100' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=100#easy-footnote-bottom-17-100' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Hindenburg Line&lt;\/span&gt; - A defensive line, 90 miles long, constructed by the German Army during the winter of 1916 &amp;amp; 17. Designed to shorten the front line by 25 miles and thereby reduce the number of Divns required to hold it\u00a0&lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span> and had only been captured during the attacks carried out between the 9th and 12th of April.<\/p>\n<p><em>\"The new sector occupied by the 50th Divn was on the ridge immediately east of the villages of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Heninel<\/span>. The river Cojeul ran north-easterly through <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Heninel<\/span> past the eastern outskirts of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt<\/span> and then taking a sharp turn eastwards just south of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Guemappe<\/span>. The left flank of the Divn front rested on the river east of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt<\/span>, the right on the well defined building known as the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt Tower<\/span>, which stood upon the ridge east of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Henine<\/span>l. At <strong>1pm<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Major Robb<\/span> reconnoitred the route from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ronville Caves<\/span> to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>5pm<\/strong> the officers and men who had been detailed to remain behind when the Bn went into action marched back to billets in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Arras<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>That night, two Coys of the 9th Bn DLI were holding the front line from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt Tower<\/span> northwards for about six to seven hundred yards, and two coys were in a sunken road just east of the Cojeul River. Meanwhile orders had been issued that the VI and VII Corps would again advance on the 14th.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-100-5\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-100-5-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-100-5-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-100-5-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><strong>Saturday, 14th April 1917<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 151st Bde was to advance the attack in order to protect the left flank of the 56th Divn, who were tasked with capturing <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Cherisy<\/span>, and form a defensive flank facing north along the high ground roughly just south of the 80 metre contour, with their left flank in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt Tower<\/span>. Zero hour was set for 5.30am. The 6th DLI would advance at zero hour with the 8th Bn DLI and 5th Bn Borders following later. This attack met with some success with the 6th Bn DLI reaching German trenches just south of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt Tower<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt Tower<\/span> was destined to become the scene of continual fighting during the next few days because it commanded a view of all the Divns approaches from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Telegraph Hill<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>5.30pm<\/strong> the 4th Bn moved in coy and platoon order from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ronville Caves<\/span> to the north end of '<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The Harp<\/em><\/span>' by the route reconnoitred earlier. The first to arrive discovered that the 7th Bn, whose positions the Bn were supposed to take over, were still there, so they had to lay down to the rear of the trench. However, during the move orders were received to move to '<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Cojeul Switch<\/span><\/em>' at the south end of '<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The Harp<\/em><\/span>' (map ref: N7A).<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>8pm<\/strong>, once the 5th Bn had moved forward from its positions, the Bn moved in.<\/p>\n<p>The First Battle of the Scarpe officially ended on this day, however the 4th Bns involvement with this sector had only just begun.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-100-6\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-100-6-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-100-6-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"6\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-100-6-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><strong>Sunday, 15th April 1917<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 149th Bde relief of the 151st Bde was completed early in the morning. The 6th Bn assumed control of the trenches previously held by the 9th DLI and after ejecting the enemy established a post between the opposing lines in the ruins of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt Tower<\/span>. The 7th Bn manned the support lines with two Coys in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Nepal Trench<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span id='easy-footnote-20-100' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=100#easy-footnote-bottom-20-100' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Nepal Trench&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span> and two along the bank east of the river Cojeul, the 5th Bn were in<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Niger Trench<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><span id='easy-footnote-21-100' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=100#easy-footnote-bottom-21-100' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Niger Trench&lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;\u00a0&lt;\/span&gt;&lt;\/span&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span> and the 4th Bn in Cojeul Switch<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"> <span id='easy-footnote-22-100' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/www.4thbnnf.com\/wordpress\/?page_id=100#easy-footnote-bottom-22-100' title='&lt;\/span&gt; &lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff0000;&quot;&gt;Cojeul Switch\u00a0&lt;\/span&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;color: #ff9900;&quot;&gt;'><sup>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>3.30pm<\/strong> the enemy were observed attempting to dig a sap towards <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wancourt Tower<\/span>, but a platoon from the 6th Bn were successful in thwarting this. A communication trench was subsequently dug running from the front line to the north of the tower.
