CSM Thomas Thompson Charlton

Thomas Thompson was the eldest of Henry and Hannah Charlton's (nee Thompson) three children and was born in the latter half of 1881 at Benwell, Northumberland. CSM T.T Charlton

His date of enlistment in the 6th (Territorial) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers is unknown at present, however, he was a timber merchant's clerk and married to Dorothy when he embarked with the battalion for France on the 20th of April 1915. Judging by the Medal Index Card shown below he was transferred to the 4th Bn on promotion to Company Sergeant Major.

At some stage Thomas was wounded and eventually returned home to 12 Belle Grove Terrace, Newcastle. He died of his wounds, two days after his mother and eight months after his father, at Lynthorpe, Wickham, Co Durham on the 4th of December 1918 and is buried in St. John's Westgate and Elswick Cemetery (plot G.C.310), Newcastle-on-Tyne.

His Medal Index Card (below) indicates that he was awarded the Victory Medal, British War Medal, 1914/15 Star and Territorial Force Efficiency Medal.
